Key to Emydidae (Pond and Marsh Turtles)

A. Turtle less than 13 cm carapace length, head and neck are black with 
spots or broken stripes, carapace smooth, keelless and unserrated,
carapace has pattern of small yellow spots which may fade with age, 
plastron yellow or yellowy orange and each scute has a large black 
blotch, entire plastron may darken to black with age.
             
             Clemmys guttata (Spotted Turtle)



B. Turtle with keeled, unserrated, heavily sculpted carapace, plastron 
is yellow with a dark blotch on each scute, underside of neck is 
yellow, orange or red.
             
             Clemmys insculpta (Wood Turtle)


   
C.Turtle with top of head blue-gray with tan pattern of lines while the 
chin, throat and neck are yellow, carapace smooth, keelless and 
unserrated, carapace generally has a pattern of tan to yellow irregular 
spots or lines, plastron yellow with dark blotches on the scutes to 
almost completely black.
             
             Emydoidea blandingii (Blanding's Turtle)
     

D.Turtle with head striped yellow and red, carapace smooth, keelless 
and unserrated, carapace has red markings at edges and may have a 
stripe down middle, plastron highly variable in pattern of markings, 
but always yellow.
             
             Chrysemys picta (Painted Turtle)
     

E. Turtle with head striped yellow, carapace slightly keeled and 
serrated at the rear, carapace greenish with pattern of fine yellow 
lines, plastron cream to yellow in adults.
             
             Graptemys geographica (Common Map Turtle)
