6a.  large oval glands behind each eye, dark brown above, lighter below,
may have small irregular spots, no tubercles on feet

                    Ambystoma gracile (Northwest Salamander)

6b.  no large oval gland behind each eye, dark black or grey with blue
flecks or speckles

                   Jefferson Salamander Complex

6c.  no large oval gland behind each eye, black to dark brown above, gray
to grayish yellow dusting on sides, belly black, possibly with tiny
flecks, Pelee Island, Ontario only

                    Ambystoma texanum (Small-mouthed Salamander)

6d.  no large oval gland behind each eye, various colours, dark with
light spots, bars or blotches or light with a network of dark spots,
broad head with small eyes, tubercles on soles of feet

                   Ambystoma tigrinum (Tiger Salamander)
