Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia has 13 species of amphibians. As Nova Scotia does not extend very far north, most species are found across the province, in the appropriate habitats. Two species, the Four-Toed Salamander and the Bullfrog, have limited distributions in Nova Scotia. All of the species found in Nova Scotia are also found in Ontario, Québec and New Brunswick.


Salamanders

         Eastern Newt -- Triton Vert -- Notophthalmus viridescens

    Mole Salamanders
         Blue-spotted Salamander -- Salamandre à Points Bleus -- Ambystoma laterale
         Spotted Salamander -- Salamandre Maculée -- Ambystoma maculatum

    Lungless Salamanders
         Four-toed Salamander -- Salamandre à Quatre Doigts -- Hemidactylium scutatum
         Redback Salamander -- Salamandre Rayée -- Plethodon cinereus

Frogs and Toads

    True Toads
         American Toad -- Crapaud d'Amerique -- Bufo americanus

    Treefrogs
         Spring Peeper -- Rainette Crucif re -- Pseudacris crucifer

    True Frogs
         Bullfrog -- Ouaouaron -- Rana catesbeiana
         Green Frog -- Grenouille Verte -- Rana clamitans
         Mink Frog -- Grenouille du Nord -- Rana septentrionalis
         Northern Leopard Frog -- Grenouille Léopard -- Rana pipiens
         Pickerel Frog -- Grenouille des Marais -- Rana palustris
         Wood Frog -- Grenouille des Bois -- Rana sylvatica
